A) Coronation Primary 1953 school bus

Note from Wendy Phillips: Jim Dudgeon advises that the bus was blue and that the driver's name was Siliwin. The bus had a large mechanical hand used to signal stops and turns, operated by a vertical lever with a push button affair. The hand was slid out in the vertical position for stops, and the lever was lifted slightly and the hand flipped over to the right when making a turn. The bus also had a sun visor, a black curtain which slid up and down on two steel vertical rods.

Jim and his brothers, who lived in 12th Street, near the Comworks Club, were the first to be dropped off, and he wants to know if anyone remembers where all the drop-off points were. I started school in 1954 and know I got dropped off outside my house in Markham Road near the airport. As far as I can recall, it wasn't until later, when we moved "up top", that there were specific pickup points. We lived in Second Street, and ours was in First Street, outside the old District Administration offices opposite the Lae Club. more-or-less where the Niall Community Centre later came into being.
