Note from Wendy Phillips: Does anyone recognize themselves? I know one of the teachers is Julie Smythe because my brother, Richard Phillips, always called her Julie Miss Smythe and absolutely adored her. He is the blonde-haired boy sitting next to the taller boy with his finger in his mouth (seated, middle of photo).
Note from Marion Shepherd: This photo was actually taken in 1964 - the year we arrived in Lae. I am the one climbing the pole: Marion Shepherd. Peter Bowman is in it: on the far right, (sitting in front of a PNG or mixed race boy who is on a seat), on the top step, in a dark shirt with a white patch on his right shoulder, looking knowingly at the camera. Nicola Pearce is possibly centre in the front row. I absolutely loved that pre-school. My memories of it are hazy but my feelings about it remain warm and fuzzy.
Note from Rowan Hughes: I am the fair-haired boy second right, second step, with the band-aid on my left leg, talking to Rowan Evans (last right, black lace-up shoes and checkered shirt). I remember him since we had the same name. The girl on my left, turned sideways to the camera, is most likely Donna Whalen, whose Dad was an inspector with the PNG Constabulary. My father worked for DCA in PNG from 1964-72: we were in Lae in 1964 and part of '65 and lived in 3/13th Street (Coronation Drive), near the Botanic Gardens. My brother, Howard was in Diane Phillips' class, and my brother Steven and sister Lynn were at Lae High; Lynn left at the end of '64 and later married Eddie Martin, a crewman on the Bulolo.
