Lae ‘54: our next house in 2nd Street (see story below).

B) Lae '56 - our house in Second Street

This is the house in which most people who knew me in Lae would remember me living - brand new and painted out in Mum’s choice of colours, much to Admin painter, Dick Dodds’ disgust.  He favoured a nice pale grey throughout - didn’t like Mum’s teal green and flamingo pink feature walls a bit! They'd become fast friends, though, by the time he’d completed the job. His daughter, Vivienne, a glamorous and very beautiful fashion buyer for a large Sydney department store, stayed with us for several months when she visited him in Lae in 1961, dating pilot Brian Badger, who became a fixture at our house for the duration. Sadly, he died in an air crash near Mt Hagen in December that same year.

On a lighter note, anyone who was in my Mum Sheila Phillips' Brownies pack in the 50's might remember doing their "exam" at our kitchen sink to earn their Washing Up badge. Like many an ex-Brownie from Lae I'm still a world-champion washer-upper☻.
