Note from Wendy Phillips: Thanks to Linda and also Carmel Haythorne (now Tuohey), who has come up with a few more names/corrections. Carmel was at Lae High in '62 but was absent the day the photo was taken Anyone who was there in '62 may remember that there was a total eclipse of the sun  that year, and that Lae was the epicentre. There were scientists from all over the world in town, including a team of Japanese astronomers who took a film of us students and presented the school with a telescope. I have never forgotten the experience - the waves of undulating light and shadow that preceded the eclipse - or how beautiful the sun looked at the moment of totality, when we were finally allowed to turn away from our shadow boxes; like a giant diamond ring blazing brilliantly against a background of deepest blue. Mind you, I don't remember us kids ever being given the opportunity to try out that telescope! Still, I have one now, along with a star atlas, and make regular use of both whenever the opportunity arises.
