~ A brief history of the school ~

Glimpses of the school as seen through former students' eyes:

Jim Dudgeon, student 1955 - '62:

I first attended the primary school on coronation drive about 1955, students I can still remember were Phillip Sutton, Colin Worrall (who was great at cricket), and Tommy Leadbeater. Head Master was a Mr Breakspear, who at the time had two broken legs in plaster. It's true, he did!

Other teachers were Mrs Grey, Mrs Mayhew and Mrs Jean Stephens who had the first blue rinse in her hair. What a shock it was to us kids who had never seen this before!!! Subjects were English, Maths, Poetry, (who remembers the tortoise-shell cat), sport days, Social Science, and if you were good you got an early mark to go home five minutes before anyone else.

The following extract is taken from:

Coronation College Heritage web site

"…The earliest buildings were erected in 1951, and Lae Primary School commenced classes shortly afterwards. The buildings have accommodated continuous classes, from the original school, to the change to the Lae Primary A School in the 1960's, to the Lae International Primary School  (LIPS) from the 1970's, and finally to Coronation International Primary School in 1992, and finally expanding into the Coronation College we know today…"

Cheryl Pearce (nee Davey) has been in touch with the school, who said they were very interested in our project, though we have not heard anything further from them to date. They told her in that initial contact that, sadly, the old buildings were demolished in 1992 due to white ant damage.
