In the same class as
Leonie Phillips, Jim Dudgeon and Gary Gould. Kevin now lives in Craignish,
Hervey Bay, Qld. His family lived in Lae from the mid 50’s to the mid 60’s.
He remembers Steven Haynes, his best mate, who ended up going to Manus
Island, also a teacher, Mr Huey, whom he thought was a great teacher. He can
still remember a song Mr Huey taught the class – “Ricey”, about the war in
the Pacific and the natives who helped save a lot of lives, and who only had
rice and dried fish to eat. Kevin joined the army in ’67 and served a year in
Vietnam. He would love to hear from any old PNG friends (see contact details

Hawken’s Athletics Team photo 1959, Coronation Primary page 5. Xavier grew up
in Chinatown, Lae, and started school in 1953 at the Chinese
School. Mrs. Duncan and Mr. Tuohy were his teachers. In 1957, along with his
fellow Chinese/mixed race students, he was relocated to Coronation Primary
when the Chinese school closed. He completed Grades 3, 4 & 5 at
Coronation with teachers Mrs. Slattery, Mrs. Gray, and a Miss Reid, who would
not allow the use of ballpoint or fountain pens; her students had to use a
quill pen with a nib, ink and blotting paper. In Grade 6, in 1960, he
transferred to what later became Bulae (next to Eric Woo’s Store, later
Andersons Supermarket), and was one of the first batch of students ever to
inhabit Bulae. After finishing school, Xavier worked for ABCO, which was
taken over by F.H. Stevens, then Mayne Nickless. He now owns a restaurant
named Gypsy’s in Shekou, a bayside suburb of Shenzhen, China. See Wendy’s

John, Eileen (both deceased). Eileen owned or
managed a shop opposite Lae Theatre milkbar, The Salad Bowl, which sold
highland produce). |
Lived out along Markham
Road. Attended St Mary’s only, according to Chris Byrne. Had a younger
brother, Marcus or Mark, who still lives in PNG, so Deirdre Whitton advises.
Her mother and Eileen were close friends, and stayed in touch until Eileen’s
death in Cairns. ×Note
from Wendy Phillips: Cheryl Davey remembers a number of Coronation students
transferring to St Marys when it opened in 1956. Michael may well have been a
student at Coronation at least until then. |
