In the same class as
Leonie Phillips, Jim Dudgeon and Gary Gould. Kevin now lives in Craignish,
Hervey Bay, Qld. His family lived in Lae from the mid 50’s to the mid 60’s.
He remembers Steven Haynes, his best mate, who ended up going to Manus
Island, also a teacher, Mr Huey, whom he thought was a great teacher. He can
still remember a song Mr Huey taught the class – “Ricey”, about the war in
the Pacific and the natives who helped save a lot of lives, and who only had
rice and dried fish to eat. Kevin joined the army in ’67 and served a year in
Vietnam. He would love to hear from any old PNG friends (see contact details

Hawken’s Athletics Team photo 1959, Coronation Primary page 5. Xavier grew up
in Chinatown, Lae, and started school in 1953 at the Chinese
School. Mrs. Duncan and Mr. Tuohy were his teachers. In 1957, along with his
fellow Chinese/mixed race students, he was relocated to Coronation Primary
when the Chinese school closed. He completed Grades 3, 4 & 5 at
Coronation with teachers Mrs. Slattery, Mrs. Gray, and a Miss Reid, who would
not allow the use of ballpoint or fountain pens; her students had to use a
quill pen with a nib, ink and blotting paper. In Grade 6, in 1960, he
transferred to what later became Bulae (next to Eric Woo’s Store, later
Andersons Supermarket), and was one of the first batch of students ever to
inhabit Bulae. After finishing school, Xavier worked for ABCO, which was
taken over by F.H. Stevens, then Mayne Nickless. He now owns a restaurant
named Gypsy’s in Shekou, a bayside suburb of Shenzhen, China. See Wendy’s

Her mother and Eileen were close friends, and stayed in touch until Eileen’s

In Stephen Barbour’s

His parents were mad golfers so a lot of time was spent at the Lae Golf Club;
he loved the Friday night movies at the club. He is now a police officer on
the Gold Coast. (Info supplied by Stephen and by Mark himself. See Wendy’s

known as Worrall’s chemist. The Worrall family left Lae in June 1964 to

(NGI) down near the wharf. |
PNG Forum member (user
name BZAV). Brian came down to Lae from Rising Sun Goldmine in 1952 and had
to learn to speak English before he could start school. He remembers the
Pedro and Robin Hood movies and another play produced by Arthur Strachan,
Dangerous Dan McGrew, in which he was the barman. When he left school in ’62
he started an apprenticeship with CDW, went “finish” in ’66 but came back to
CDW as a 5th year apprentice. He “went finish true” in ’69, and
like all of us was sorry to leave New Guinea behind. |

Christine Hartmann, who transferred to Bulae in 1964 (see photo). The family
came “south” in October ’66; Christine went back to Lae for a visit when she
was 15, but hasn’t been back since. Check out the great old Lae photos she
sent in to the site. |

met Marie in PNG in 1968 when she came up there to work with the Commonwealth
Bank. After their marriage, he did a 3 1/2 year stint in Kainantu at a coffee
Plantation, a 12 months period back in Lae, then left for Australia in
Dec.1978, going back to PNG to work on the coffee plantation for another two
and a half years before returning to Oz for good. |

If you can’t find yourself on this list the omission is purely
unintentional – we’d love to have you aboard, and to know where you lived then
(in Lae), where you are now, and what you’re doing these days. Likewise if your
name is spelt wrong: I am relying on sometimes 50-year-old memories here, which
may be a bit rusty after so long J. Please advise
if you want your contact details listed so others can get in touch. Also, if
you have any names to add or correct, please contact me at: wendyemc@optusnet.com.au or give
me a bell on (07) 3299 1290, (“me” being Wendy Clarke, formerly
Phillips for those who may have stumbled across this page from some other
direction than my own web site or the Coronation Primary home page :-).
P.S. You can find
quite a few ex-students/classmates in my guest
book. Why not add your own name so old friends can get in touch? I have
had to start moderating entries due to spamming, so they won’t appear straight
away, but all genuine entries WILL appear as soon as I have vetted them.
