General Notes:
By Dick (Richard Arthur) Phillips
Edward was a leading horse breeder; he bred Clydesdales, thoroughbreds, hacks, hunters and ponies. He had a great love for animals and skill in handling them. His neighbours regarded him as the local vet and called on him whenever they had sick animals. He was a keen exhibitor at all local shows and at the Royal Show. Edward cut his right knee shortly before his wife, Margaret died. This injury caused him many years of suffering and eventually left him crippled. He had a very fine tenor voice. Singing around the piano appears to have been a regular part of his life, and was greatly enjoyed by all. Some of the land near Exeter Farm had been divided into small blocks, and families living on them could not make a living from the land alone. Often the husbands had to work away from their families, and the wives and children were left to manage as best they could. Edward would leave a milking cow with these families, and replace it when the cow went dry. In addition, he sent his children around with gifts of whatever meat and vegetables he had on hand to help out.
After the death of his first wife, Margaret in 1885, he married her older sister, Elizabeth.
