bullet  General Notes:

by Dick (Richard Arthur) Phillips

Richard purchased 15 acres of land on Fish River, 1/2 mile upstream from Bulley's Crossing on 5th December 1861, seven months after his marriage to Elizabeth Bulley. He took up a further selection of 40 acres at Fish River on 5/6/1862, but could not meet payments and the lease lapsed on 22/12/1865. In 1868 he moved to Marengo, then in 1869 accepted the task of setting up "Bygaloree" Station, 26,000 acres, for owners Tout & Kelly. He left "Bygaloree" in 1876 and took job of mail contractor, leaving Forbes 9am Sunday morning, travelling to Bogan Gate, Dandaloo, then back to Bogan Gate and Forbes by 6pm Friday afternoon. The family lived at Brown Street, Forbes at that time. In 1881 he was manager of "Woodlands" station, 35 sq. km, at Bogan River. In 1882 he acquired the licence for the Bogan Gate Hotel and was appointed Receiver of Mails on 1st October 1883, for an annual allowance of five pounds ($10.00). He gave up the hotel on 16th February 1885 and moved to Clarinda Street, Parkes, where he then took an interest in gold mining. During his time in Parkes, where he lived until his death, Richard took an active part in labour organizations when they were formed, and was elected president many times. He served as an alderman on Parkes council for 3 years from 13th February 1888. Mary Hall, his eldest daughter, was obviously devoted to him. She wrote in her diary after his death, "Darling father died 26th Sept 1907 after 12 weary months of suffering. May the love of our darling rest in peace." Richard was buried the following day in the Old Catholic section of Parkes Cemetery.
