Robert Joseph Clarke commenced school at Stanley River Provisional School outside Kilkoy in 1898. His children all attended Kilkoy State School, Phyllis commencing in 1921, Norma in 1927 (Lily and George Parsons were enrolled at Kilkoy State School the same year), Ruby in 1928, Dan in 1930 and Maureen in 1933. There is some question as to his parentage and that of his brother, James. His marriage Certificate lists his father as Robert Ransby Clarke and his mother as Mary Ann Hine, but Robert Ransby's Death Certificate does not list Robert Joseph or James as his children. Family history has it that Robert Ransby's daughter, Mary Ann Clarke, gave birth to them out of wedlock, was subsequently put in a home at Toowoomba, and that they were raised by their grandparents. This information has not been corroborated by any documentation, and the part about being put in a Home seems unlikely, given that she would have been 21 at the time of James' birth. However, until further information comes to light she is listed as their mother. Family members have so far been unable to locate James' and Robert Joseph's birth certificates.
