Lillian's marriage certificate to Walter shows her father's name as Alfred Bolton, labourer, and her mother as Phoebe James. The family appears in the 1901 census as living at 34 Underdown Street, Herne Bay, Kent, England. According to oral family history, she migrated to Australia with her family at age 14 (approx 1912). She married Walter Albert Parsons in 1915 when she was seventeen years old, though her marriage certificate states she was nineteen. After he left the navy Walter led her a merry chase, moving from one place to another, sometimes with disastrous results. Her wishes were never consulted in his decisions, which wasn't unusual for those times, and I remember her telling me a story about how he once applied for a job as an engineer at a mine up in the north-west of Queensland. He was well qualified for the position, and couldn't understand why he received no reply. There were several replies, all right, the first offering him the job and the remainder asking why he hadn't got back to them. Walter never got to see a single one. Lillian intercepted them before he got home from work and burned then in the kitchen stove - she'd had enough of being carted from pillar to post! As far as I know, she kept the secret from him for the rest of his life; it wasn't until well after his death that she told me this story.
