bullet  General Notes:

By Sandie (Sandra Marie) Pedersen nee Parsons

George and Mary Parsons were loners who kept to themselves on their pineapple plantation up in the hills. He is said to have run away from home at an early age (12 ?). George worked at logging until he lost one of his thumbs. He received a settlement, which allowed him to purchase a pineapple plantation in the Glasshouse Mountains of Queensland. Not much is known about their lives. George was known to enjoy fishing in the steams and lakes with dynamite. George and Mary did not have any children.

Added to by Wendy Clarke:

The story about Gorge fishing with dynamite is true: he'd often tell the family about all the fish he caught on the Mary River. He offered to take Bob with him a few times, but his Dad would never let him go. There were no explanations, and he never could understand why. Years later he got to hear the true story; that George never bothered with such mundane things as a hook and line. He used to wait until the tide was due to come in and string a net across the creek, then he'd chuck in a couple of sticks of gelignite. When the stunned fish were swept into his net, he'd scoop them up and make a quick get- away. Apart from the fact that such proceedings were highly illegal, the reason he was in such a hurry to get out of there, one of his mates had once blown off two fingers from his right hand while using pliers to crimp the detonator onto the fuse. Not that George let a little thing like that worry him. “I'm a bloody sight more careful than that,” he'd tell Bob's Dad. “You wouldn't catch me using pliers to crimp my detonators on! I use my teeth!”

Bob took me to visit George and Mary on at least two occasions after our marriage. Our kids were fascinated by the talking parrot he kept loose in the house and by the chickens that ran in and out as they pleased. The atmosphere, though warm and friendly, wasn't exactly hygienic. I never saw him actually do it, but George reckoned he cleaned the carpets regularly with a shovel. He was a lifelong fossicker and had a few opals and other precious and semi-precious stones he would trot out to show any visitors, along with a samurai sword and some tall tales about the war to go with it.
