General Notes:
by Wendy Clarke, nee Phillips
Jane arrived in Australia on 31st December 1836, aboard the ship "Earl Grey" from Chatham, England, with her soldier husband, Charles and infant daughter, Sarah. The voyage took 186 days. Their second daughter, Rebecca was born in Richmond, and daughter Caroline in Norfolk Island when Charles was posted there. Five months after their return in September 1939, Charles was discharged from the army as medically unfit. As for Jane, if she thought her days of being carted from pillar to post were over when Charles left the army, she was in for a disappointment. He seems to have suffered from a case of perpetual itchy feet. He was in turn a constable at Windsor, where their fourth daughter, Mary Jane was born, a farmer at Manly Cove after he bought 100 acres of beachfront land at Cabbage Tree Beach in partnership with Christopher Skally, and where their daughters Charlotte and Lucy were born, a farmer at Enfield, where their son Charles Josiah was born, a shopkeeper at Ashfield, where their son William was born, a carrier at Prospect in 1855, where their son, Federick was born, and a market gardener at Penrith in 1864, where their son Frederick was born. Their last son, Edward, was born at South Creek, where Jane remained until her death in 1884. She is buried with Charles in the graveyard of St Mary Magdalene church, St Marys.
