General Notes:
By Richard Arthur (Dick) Phillips
Lucy worked on her parents' farm at Goodrich until her eighteenth year. She cut down gum trees, cleared scrub and built fences. The only way that she could buy new clothes for herself was to trap rabbits and sell the skins. She was an excellent shot, and could kill a snake from 30 yards away.
Lucy eventually grew tired of being an unpaid farm labourer, and left her family to go and live with her grandmother Lucy at Stuart Town. She met Alex Clyne there, and married him at Wellington when she was 20. The Clyne family were Catholic, which led to conflict with her parents. Lucy and Alex lived in tin sheds at remote railway camps until they moved to Yeoval. Later, after they moved to Medlow Bath, their daughter Marjorie died, and Lucy went to work in a laundry at Katoomba to help pay the doctor's and hospital bills. During the war, she worked at the small arms factory at Lithgow. Once the war was over, she returned to the laundry, and later worked at David Jones; clothing factory.
On the death of her mother, Lucy was not mentioned in the will. The family solicitor wrote to her and asked her if she wished to contest her mother's will, so she wrote back asking for five hundred pounds, which was sent to her by return mail. This payment was arranged by her sister, Elsie, and her brother Ray. Lucy was lucky that her other sister, Lillian, was not an executor of the will. She and Alex used the money to help buy their home in Loftus Street, Katoomba. Lucy needed transport for her apple run, so she bought a small truck and learned to drive. She could do anything she set her mind to; she laid all the concrete paths around their house with Alex, and later on, after his death, built an internal set of steps from her kitchen to the bathroom and laundry under her house. She was a beautiful knitter, and made clothes for all her family.
Lucy was a wonderful mother and all her family loved her dearly. She had a hard life but did not let it sour her. She was shy, and seemed gruff to some people, but she was a gracious lady, who was always there for her family. Lucy died on 14th August, 1989, and was cremated at Pine Grove. Her memorial plaque is in the Camellia Garden.
