My cat died today. Do you think I'd cry? Hey, after all, he was only a cat, And not an affectionate one at that. No, I must have got something in my eye. The kids left him with us when they moved on, But the vet and food bills were mine from the start. Damn cat! Who'd think you'd have a place in my heart? That I'd find it aching once you were gone? Pink ears, pink nose, white coat gleaming like silk. If I went to the fridge you'd wrap your paws Around my ankles, but never with claws, And hold me until I reached for the milk. Then you'd box the dog's ears and run away. Damn cat! That's why my eyes are wet today. Wendy Clarke © 2000 |
